I Love NYC Pets Month

Out of the Cage! (January 2011)

Just Around the Corner: Fifth Annual I Love NYC Pets Month!

Next month, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals presents its fifth annual I Love NYC Pets Month to shine a spotlight on all the wonderful animals waiting to be adopted from the many shelters and rescue groups throughout New York City. Our theme this year is "Pets Are Family, Too!" in recognition of the important role our pets play in our lives.

You can read about all the events and activities planned for the month at ILoveNYCPets.org, but here are a few of the month's highlights:

I Love NYC Pets Month Spay Day, February 19

The Mayor's Alliance, the ASPCA, and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) collaborate to present a spectacular adoption and service event to celebrate I Love NYC Pets Month and Spay Day.

Set in the Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Manhattan's Lower East Side, the event will offer a range of activities, including dog and cat adoptions by Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) on a North Shore Animal League America Mobile Adoption Unit; free spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats on ASPCA Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics; free microchipping and vaccinations; onsite dog licensing; advice and helpful tips from a range of animal experts — trainers, a groomer, TTouch specialists, a lawyer, as well as representatives from the HSUS Pets for Life Program that offers resources for pet owners who are having difficulty caring for their pets.

Fun activities include a special Kids Zone featuring face-painting, popcorn, and cotton candy; giveaways of pet food, collars, and leashes; and a special appearance by the stars of Doggie Moms, the new reality TV show from NYC Media premiering on February 16 on NYC life (channel 25). The show follows the lives of real-life doggie moms and includes valuable information about responsible pet care and NYC resources for dog owners. The Doggie Moms will offer advice to pet parents and free copies of their Tips for New Pet Owners guide produced jointly by NYC Media and the Mayor's Alliance.

Representatives from TD Bank, the pet-friendly bank, will also be on hand with giveaways and refreshments.

We hope to see you there! And if you'd like to volunteer to help, either at the event or the weekend before the event when we'll be distributing flyers throughout the neighborhood, please contact us at ILoveNYCPets@AnimalAllianceNYC.org.

North Shore Animal League AmericaChinese New Year Parade and Rabbit Adoptions

Rabbits are on parade — literally! — at this year's 12th Annual Lunar New Year Parade & Festival on February 6 in Chinatown, organized by the Better Chinatown Society. It's the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, and what better way to bring good luck to NYC's homeless bunnies than to find them new homes.

Rabbit Rescue & Rehab, the NYC chapter of the House Rabbit Society and an Alliance Participating Organization, will showcase some of their adorable house rabbits in the parade, riding comfortably on a North Shore Animal League America Mobile Adoption Unit. The van's roll-up sides reveal large display windows, so the bunnies can wave to the crowds from the safety and comfort of their windowed cages. Volunteers from Rabbit Rescue & Rehab will escort the van, handing out flyers to would-be adopters encouraging them to come meet the bunnies up close and personal at the Manhattan Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) shelter (326 East 110th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues), where rabbit experts are on hand to provide information on caring for house rabbits.

Doggie MomsMeet the Doggie Moms!

If you haven't heard about the Doggie Moms yet, just wait. Their new reality TV show premieres on February 16, and the "moms" — Karen, Grace, Leslie, Ashley, and Erika — are excited to team up with the Mayor's Alliance to promote pet adoption and responsible pet ownership for I Love NYC Pets Month.

Doggie Moms follows a group of New York City women whose lives revolve around their dogs. They insist on the best for their furry, four-legged "children" — and they won't be deterred! The six-part series, created by Next Millennium Productions and airing on NYC life (channel 25), features all five "moms" as they compete for fame and fortune and jockey for social stature in the doggie world. But they also work tirelessly to give back to the community, raising money for local animal shelters and other charities and promoting important messages about responsible pet ownership.

The series will also serve as a resource for pet owners in the City, sharing details about the importance of spay and neuter and where to go for services, dog licensing, microchipping, and other important topics. Episodes will examine the importance of grooming and nutrition, adopting shelter pets, pet first aid, how to volunteer to help animals, and more.

Doggie Moms premieres on Wednesday, February 16, at 9:30 p.m. on NYC life (channel 25), the flagship station of NYC Media, the official network of the City of New York.

You'll have the opportunity to meet the Doggie Moms at two special I Love NYC Pets Month events in February. First, they'll appear on February 19 at the I Love NYC Pets Month Spay Day with advice for pet parents and free copies of Tips for New Pet Owners, a collaborative new guide created by NYC Media and the Mayor's Alliance. Then on February 23, the Doggie Moms will be on hand at the Mayor's Alliance Primping for Pups at Mark Garrison Salon.

Don't miss your opportunity to meet the Doggie Moms and show your support for NYC's animals!
