Anjellicle Cats Rescue Stages Inspired Adoption Event in Manhattan's West Village

Imagine the stir that would result if comedienne and animal advocate Ellen DeGeneres were spotted dancing on a busy street corner in the West Village. Now, imagine the delight of spotting more than a dozen Ellens dancing! That's what happened on Saturday, June 5, when Alliance Participating Organization (APO), Anjellicle Cats Rescue, staged a crowd-pleasing adoption event — "Laugh. Dance. Adopt." — to promote its cats and kittens awaiting new homes.

To draw attention to the kitties snuggled inside the mobile adoption unit provided by North Shore Animal League America, also an APO, Anjellicle Cats opened the event with a specially choreographed flash mob dance performed by 17 "Dancing Ellens." The spectacle was presented to honor Angelicle Cats' mission of rescuing New York City's homeless cats, and tie it in with Ms. DeGeneres' love of dancing, animals, and her support of animal shelters and rescue groups. It also recognized her holistic pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets, which is associated with the new U.S. Postal Service social awareness stamp series, "Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet," launched in April. Halo is donating a million meals to animal shelters around the country during the campaign.

"We were thrilled with this event," said Anjellicle Cats Rescue Founder and Director Kathryn Willis. "It was a wonderful way to kick off the summer and do our part in getting the word out about the overpopulation of cats and kittens throughout New York City. There is a proliferation of kittens this time of year, and working with NYC's Animal Care & Control, we have taken in so many that need homes. It was wonderful that we were able to meet and add new foster people and adopters to our network for both the kittens and the adult cats through this fun event."

Choreographer Jim Cooney rallied the 17 "Dancing Ellens" and taught them a Degeneres-inspired choreographed dance to one of the comedienne's favorite songs: "Shoop" by Salt-n-Pepa. The dancers wore Degeneres' trademark ensemble, including jeans, sneakers, and vests. Andrew Margu of Henry Margu Wigs gave Anjellicle Cats a generous discount on short blonde wigs to ensure that all the "Dancing Ellens" were perfectly coiffed.

Susan Richard, star and producer of All for Animals, attended the event. Her video coverage is included in All for Animals Episode 15: "Summer Fun For Animals" (0:35).
