Trails to Tails 2010 Map

Out of the Cage! (February 2010)

Rational Animal Unveils New Trails to Tails Shelter Maps at City Hall on February 26

At 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 26, Rational Animal will unveil its all-new Trails to Tails map on the steps at City Hall. To celebrate the launch, Rational Animal is hosting a pre-unveiling party on February 25 at DoggyStyle, nyc, in SoHo. You're invited to attend both exciting events!

Note: Due to weather, the launch event has been rescheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 5, and the the pre-unveiling party has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 5.

Trails to Tails is the full-color, fold-out map of New York City's five boroughs that pinpoints animal shelters and other locations where people can adopt a pet. The map also shows the locations of NYC dog runs, and identifies many other useful resources for NYC pet owners, including providers of free or low-cost spay/neuter services; low-cost vet care; purebred rescue organizations for dogs and cats; rescue groups for reptiles, birds, and rabbits; dog licensing; microchipping; poisoning hotline; pet-friendly housing; how to report animal abuse; and information about Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) of stray and feral cats. In short, Trails toTrails is a must-have for all current and future NYC pet owner/guardians.

This fifth edition of Trails to Tails features illustrations by world-renowned 3-D pop artist Charles Fazzino, based on New York Is, his collectible illustration of New York City. Mr. Fazzino has created a one-of-a-kind pop-up Trails to Tails map that will be auctioned online to raise funds for Rational Animal's campaigns. This newest edition of Trails to Tails is sponsored by the ASPCA and The PEDIGREE Foundation, with help from New York Tails magazine.

Trails to Tails is the brainchild of Rational Animal, the NYC-based, non-profit organization that produces media to increase public awareness of at-risk animals. Rational Animal has produced adoption and spay/neuter PSAs for the Mayor's Alliance, as well as concerts and humane education events.

"With thousands of homeless animals still being euthanized at NYC shelters due to lack of space," says Susan Brandt, founder of Rational Animal, "Trails to Tails is meant to be a lifesaving tool that helps more people find and adopt these wonderful animals awaiting loving homes. With the maps, we can engage more people to do their part to help the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals achieve its goal of ending euthanasia at NYC shelters by 2015."

To give the new Trails to Tails a hearty debut, Rational Animal chose the steps of City Hall as the location for the launch. New York City Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D - North Brooklyn) will be on hand to announce that his district office will begin carrying pocket-sized versions of Trails to Tails for his constituents beginning this month in honor of "I Love NYC Pets" Month — the Mayor's Alliance's annual pet adoption campaign — and will encourage other city offices to do the same. Mayor's Alliance President Jane Hoffman also will speak at the Friday morning celebration.

Those interested in getting a preview of the Trails to Tails launch are invited to attend a pre-unveiling party hosted by Rational Animal the evening before the City Hall event. The celebration on Thursday, February 25, will take place from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at DoggyStyle, nyc, the dog boutique and grooming spa at 73 Thompson Street (between Spring and Broome Streets) in SoHo. Guests can enjoy free adult beverages (courtesy of Tito's Vodka and Heineken USA); purchase an extra dog toy or collar from DoggyStyle, nyc, (a percentage of sales will go directly to Rational Animal); and meet some adorable dogs for adoption from area rescue groups.
