Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists Supports NYC's Animals

Pet Food Drive

Again this year, Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists (FAVS) — a Mayor's Alliance veterinary partner that has treated numerous animals through our Picasso Veterinary Fund program — is conducting a food drive that will benefit Mayor's Alliance Participating Organizations. They are asking that people donate canned cat food, canned dog food, dog biscuits, and pet toys. The donations will be dispersed by the Mayor's Alliance to selected member organizations throughout the city.

Manhattan: Anjellicle Cats Rescue, City Critters, KittyKind

Bronx: Paws All Around, Poor Animals of St. Francis

Brooklyn: Slope Street Cats, Animal Care & Control

Queens: CSM Stray Foundation, Linda's Feral Cat Assistance, SaveKitty Foundation

Staten Island: P.L.U.T.O. Rescue of Richmond County, Feline Rescue of Staten Island

Donations will be accepted through January 2, 2008. If you'd like to donate items to the drive, you can bring them to Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists, 1 West 15th Street (at 5th Avenue), Manhattan. Preferred drop-off times are 7:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m. If you have questions about the food drive, please contact Monica Dunn, FAVS Hospital Manager, at (212) 924-3311.

NYPD K-9 Unit First Aid Training

In another show of support for a special breed of NYC animals, FAVS provided New York Police Department K-9 Unit handlers with extensive emergency intervention training as a part of an exclusive NYPD Emergency Veterinary Training program.

During the three-hour course and live demonstration, officers learned first aid techniques and procedures to administer vital first aid care for their four-legged partners in case of an on-the-job injury or accident. Subjects covered included physical examinations, airway management, heat stroke, electrocution, poisoning, gunshot and stab wounds, and breathing tube insertion, among other topics.

The training course is part of a support program provided by FAVS to contribute its services and expertise to local law enforcement and the community.
