2012 Annual Report

Letter From the President

This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, and the eighth year in our ten-year strategic plan to transform New York City into a no-kill community. We continued to drive down euthanasia at Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C), while intake at AC&C continued to decline. In 2012, intake and euthanasia reached historic lows, and for the first time in AC&C's history, euthanasia fell well below 10,000, to 8,252.

Since 2003, through our robust community collaboration among 100-plus Maddie's Pet Partners (MPPs) and AC&C, we have saved 237,000 lives. New York City now has the lowest euthanasia per capita for any major U.S. city. In just ten years, we have altered the paradigm from one out of three lives saved in 2003 to over three out of every four lives saved in 2012 by the community collaboration.

Our decade of success is the result of the steadfast efforts of all of our Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs), which now number 150, that work diligently to provide care for NYC's homeless animals and place them with responsible adopters.

So much of this work is performed by volunteers, to whom we, and the animals, are eternally grateful. Our success would not have been possible were it not for the substantial financial support provided by Maddie's Fund®, and the ongoing commitment of funds and resources by the ASPCA, one of our founding members.

Our ability to sustain and build those programs that have the greatest impact in saving lives relies upon the generosity and commitment of caring individuals and businesses that recognize the importance of our mission and value the results we have achieved. Some of our supporters donate regularly to specific programs, such as our Wheels of Hope transport program, our Mayor's Alliance Medical Fund, or our NYC Feral Cat Initiative. Others give generously to support our overall efforts, relying upon us to put their valued gift to use where it is most needed.

Today, ten years into our journey, we are heartened and humbled by the progress we have made with the help of our supporters. We invite you to join us in our journey and share with us the unqualified satisfaction that can only come from saving a precious life.
