During October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, your donation to this program will be doubled up to our goal of $3,000!
The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals Helping Pets and People in Crisis program aims to reduce pet relinquishment to the City’s overcrowded shelters. Finding innovative ways to keep families and pets together is a key initiative of this program, and sheltering families and pets together when they leave domestic violence situations is an important means to achieving this goal. Our Marion Dougherty Safe Haven Fund* was created specifically to support our work with victims of domestic violence and their pets.
The number of co-sheltering living spaces available to domestic violence victims and their pets in New York City has recently undergone a significant expansion, inspiring more victims to leave abuse, keeping more beloved pets out of harm’s way from abusers, and reducing the number of animals forced into an already overcrowded shelter system.
Thanks to a matching grant, your gift today will be doubled to provide the necessary resources and supplies to keep these additional units running and available to victims in need!
*The Marion Dougherty Safe Haven Fund was created in 2013 in memory of legendary Hollywood casting director, Marion Dougherty, who was forced to leave her pets behind when escaping a domestic violence situation in the 1970s. Thanks to Marion’s legacy and your valued contribution, victims of domestic violence in New York City won’t have to make the same difficult choice that Marion did.
