Onyx Mends, Now Making Friends

Onyx was found during a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) project late last year in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The six-month-old kitten was bleeding profusely, having sustained a recent stab wound to the eye. According to the veterinarians who treated her, the injury likely was the result of a deliberate act of cruelty

Following emergency surgery, Onyx was on the mend. The NYC Feral Cat Initiative of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals paid for her initial medical treatment, and the Humane Society of New York Animal Clinic performed her surgery at no charge.

We placed Onyx into a foster home for several months until an appropriate permanent home was found. Because of her early trauma, she was wary of humans. But after several months, we found the perfect home for her — one that offered three special housemates: a one-eyed cat, a blind cat, and a tripod (three-legged) cat. Onyx is the only female in the troupe, and she appears to love life with her new “brothers.” And now she’s even beginning to come out of her shell with people!
