SaveKitty Foundation will instruct this class. Come
learn how to care for the feral and stray cats in your community
and make use of the many resources now available to assist you.
All steps in setting up a managed colony will be covered, including
establishing good community relations, feeding, building and placing
shelters, arranging vet care, finding recovery space, safely handling
feral cats, and trapping (with an emphasis on conducting a mass-trapping
of an entire feral colony at once). All workshop attendees will
become TNR certified, and NYC residents will gain access to free
spay/neuter and trap rental. Join the 1,500+ caretakers trained
to date! There is no fee to attend this class, but advance registration
is required.

Theological Seminary: Blessing of the Animals and Microchipping

General Theological Seminary, 21st Street (midblock,

General Theological Seminary celebrates the life
of St. Francis of Assisi, renowned for his love of animals, by offering
a "Blessing of the Animals." The event also commemorates
World Animal Day. All are welcome at our service — every animal,
every human! The service will take place outdoors on the steps of
our Chapel, weather permitting; in case of rain, the service will
be moved indoors. Please remember to leash your dogs. Small animals,
including fish, reptiles, and pets in travel cases are all welcome.
The service will last about 20 minutes. City Critters will be present
to provide pets for adoption, and the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's
Animals will be providing low-cost ($25, includes registration)
microchipping services.

for a second year in row to donate money collected at this mass
to Bobbi and the Strays. Following this event, Senator Serf Maltese
will host a pet adoption day at Bobbi and the Strays at Atlas Park.

On October 6, Rational Animal, the leading advocate
for at-risk animals in New York City, will present the 3rd annual
"Gimme Shelter: Rock & Rescue NYC" benefit concert.
A co-venture with the ASPCA, the event celebrates ten stellar NYC
animal rescue groups working with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's
Animals to end euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in city
shelters by 2015. Debbie Harry is serving as the event's honorary
chair and Beastie Boy Adrock and Gina Gershon will be the guest
hosts. Chi Chi Valenti and DJ Johnny Dynell will MC. This year's
concert will feature performances by the legendary Debbie Harry,
electronic artist Moby, Brooklyn indie power trio Earl Greyhound,
80s dance music group Goonsquad, up-and-coming rocker Lissy Trullie,
Brit rockers Bloody Social, downtown singer/songwriter Jesse Malin,
the March 4th Marching Band, DJ JD Samson, and other artists. Also

hours long and will provide you with an introduction to our volunteer
program. The orientation will be followed by a dog walking class,
for those who would like to walk dogs as part of their volunteer
activities.

17 years of age are welcome to participate in our junior volunteer

our campaign to abolish the inhumane carriage horse industry in

hopes to win the title of the Most Petacular Halloween Costume of
2008 at this event benefiting the Humane Society of New York. Wear

ASPCA: Technical Animal Rescue Course
October 31–November 2, 2008
Suffolk County Police Academy, Smithtown, Long Island
The ASPCA will be hosting a three-day Technical Animal
Rescue Course, taught by instructors from Rescue Tech International.
One day will be spent in the classroom, and two days will be spent
in the field. Topics covered include rescue philosophy; liability
and personal/department mitigation; size-up; hazard assessment,
management and preplanning; panic and behavior; communications;
personal and team equipment; animal handling equipment; rescue harnessing
for animals and humans; animal handling and behavior; rescuing animals
in water and low angle environments; and rescue scenarios/problems
The classroom portion will be taught at the Suffolk County Police
Academy and the field days will be at a location nearby. Class size
is limited. Registration is $80.

on conducting a mass-trapping of an entire feral colony at once).
All workshop attendees will become TNR certified, and NYC residents
