SaveKitty Foundation will instruct this class. Come learn how to care for the feral and stray cats in your community and make use of the many resources now available to assist you. All steps in setting up a managed colony will be covered, including establishing good community relations, feeding, building and placing shelters, arranging vet care, finding recovery space, safely handling feral cats, and trapping (with an emphasis on conducting a mass-trapping of an entire feral colony at once). All workshop attendees will become TNR certified, and NYC residents will gain access to free spay/neuter and trap rental. Join the 1,500+ caretakers trained to date! There is no fee to attend this class, but advance registration is required.

General Theological Seminary: Blessing of the Animals and Microchipping Clinic

General Theological Seminary celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, renowned for his love of animals, by offering a "Blessing of the Animals." The event also commemorates World Animal Day. All are welcome at our service — every animal, every human! The service will take place outdoors on the steps of our Chapel, weather permitting; in case of rain, the service will be moved indoors. Please remember to leash your dogs. Small animals, including fish, reptiles, and pets in travel cases are all welcome. The service will last about 20 minutes. City Critters will be present to provide pets for adoption, and the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals will be providing low-cost ($25, includes registration) microchipping services.

On October 6, Rational Animal, the leading advocate for at-risk animals in New York City, will present the 3rd annual "Gimme Shelter: Rock & Rescue NYC" benefit concert. A co-venture with the ASPCA, the event celebrates ten stellar NYC animal rescue groups working with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals to end euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in city shelters by 2015. The orientation is about one-and-a-half hours long and will provide you with an introduction to our volunteer program. The orientation will be followed by a dog walking class, for those who would like to walk dogs as part of their volunteer activities.

Calling all teen animal lovers! Teenagers 14 to 17 years of age are welcome to participate in our junior volunteer program. Fill out our junior volunteer form, have it signed by a parent or guardian, and return it to the shelter. You will then need to attend a junior volunteer orientation, which is held at the shelter once a month. The orientation is about an hour long and will provide an introduction to our junior volunteer program. Parents do not need to be in attendance, although the signed volunteer form must be brought to the orientation.

ASPCA: Technical Animal Rescue Course

October 31–November 2, 2008

Suffolk County Police Academy, Smithtown, Long Island

The ASPCA will be hosting a three-day Technical Animal Rescue Course, taught by instructors from Rescue Tech International. One day will be spent in the classroom, and two days will be spent in the field. Topics covered include rescue philosophy; liability and personal/department mitigation; size-up; hazard assessment, management and preplanning; panic and behavior; communications; personal and team equipment; animal handling equipment; rescue harnessing for animals and humans; animal handling and behavior; rescuing animals in water and low angle environments; and rescue scenarios/problems The classroom portion will be taught at the Suffolk County Police Academy and the field days will be at a location nearby. Class size is limited. Registration is $80.

Come learn how to care for the feral and stray cats in your community and make use of the many resources now available to assist you. All steps in setting up a managed colony will be covered, including establishing good community relations, feeding, building and placing shelters, arranging vet care, finding recovery space, safely handling feral cats, and trapping (with an emphasis on conducting a mass-trapping of an entire feral colony at once). All workshop attendees will become TNR certified, and NYC residents will gain access to free spay/neuter and trap rental. Join the 1,500+ caretakers trained to date! A non-refundable $15 course fee (waived for demonstrated financial need) and advance registration are required.

Do you love animals and want to volunteer? To become an adult volunteer (18 years and older), simply fill out our adult volunteer form and send it to the shelter. You will then need to attend a volunteer orientation, which is held at the shelter on the first Saturday of each month. The orientation is about one-and-a-half hours long and will provide you with an introduction to our volunteer program. The orientation will be followed by a dog walking class, for those who would like to walk dogs as part of their volunteer activities.

Calling all teen animal lovers! Teenagers 14 to 17 years of age are welcome to participate in our junior volunteer program. Fill out our junior volunteer form, have it signed by a parent or guardian, and return it to the shelter. You will then need to attend a junior volunteer orientation, which is held at the shelter once a month. The orientation is about an hour long and will provide an introduction to our junior volunteer program. Parents do not need to be in attendance, although the signed volunteer form must be brought to the orientation.
