Following is a listing of adoption events in and around NYC where you can go to adopt your next companion animal — that is, your new best friend! Listed below (highlighted in boxes) are Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festivals where multiple shelters and rescue groups show animals for adoption. Also listed below are special one-time adoption days held by Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) at locations in or near New York City. APOs may click here to submit a New York City animal event.

Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festival – Brooklyn

Saturday, August 2, 2008 (rain or shine)

11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Prospect Park (15th Street/Bartel Pritchard Circle entrance), Brooklyn

FIDO is hosting this adoption festival in honor of their 10th anniversary. In addition to adoptable cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies, this event features a steel drum band, low-cost microchipping ($25, includes insertion and registration) for dogs and cats, and Ask the Veterinarian, Ask the Trainer, Ask the Groomer, and Ask The TTouch Practitioner booths. Also, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) will have a van at the event where people can learn about identifying and protecting their pets from parasites.

Bring your dog to the ballpark as the Brooklyn Cyclones face the Batavia Muckdogs! Dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens will be available for adoption outside the front gate, and low-cost ($25) microchipping will be available for dogs of ticket-holders. Maddie, the Maddie's Fund mascot, will throw out the first ball. Maverick the Wonder Dog bobblehead giveaway.

NYC Department of Parks & Recreation: Summer on the Hudson: 6th Annual West Side County Fair

Adopt-A-Dog: 21st Annual "Puttin' On the Dog" Show and Festival

During the day, there will be a fun dog show with seventeen classes of entries and celebrity judges. Past show categories have included the Biggest Lap Dog, K-9 Krooners, A Pooch Who Can Smooch, and Clever K-9 Tricks, among others. A new class this year is Homely Hounds. MCs will be Bill Evans of ABC7 Eyewitness News, Jeff Weber of WGCH (1490 AM), and Marylee and Storm N. Norman from WEBE 108. WGCH will broadcast live from the field. Face painting, clowns, a fire truck, auction, dog show and parade, great food, Children's Corner, vendor booths, raffles and grab bags for all ages, and dog photo portraits. Most importantly, adoptable dogs and cats will be on hand to meet with prospective adoptive families. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors and children over 5; free for children 5 or younger.

General Theological Seminary: Blessing of the Animals

General Theological Seminary, 21st Street (midblock, between 9th and 10th Avenues), Manhattan

General Theological Seminary celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, renowned for his love of animals, by offering a "Blessing of the Animals." All are welcome at our service — every animal, every human! The service will take place outdoors on the steps of our Chapel, weather permitting; in case of rain, the service will be moved indoors. Please remember to leash your dogs. Small animals, including fish, reptiles, and pets in travel cases are all welcome. The service will last about 20 minutes. City Critters will be present to provide pets for adoption, and the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC's Animals will be providing low-cost ($25, includes registration) microchipping services.

Join Animal Care & Control, Bideawee, and other shelters and rescue groups at the annual St. Francis Day Fair Blessing of the Animals, where thousands of New Yorkers, their animal companions, and many international guests gather to honor St. Francis' message of compassion for all of creation. In addition to a blessing of the animals on the Cathedral green, enjoy artists and performers, as well as exhibitors including animal advocacy groups, pet adoption agencies, environmental lobbyists, peace and social justice advocates, and social service organizations. Event is free and open to the public.
