New York City Feral Cat Council (NYCFCC)
The New York City Feral Cat Council (NYCFCC) operates
within the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. The Council functions
as an advisory board to the New
York City Feral Cat Initiative, a program of the Mayor's Alliance
that is working to reduce New York City's feral cat population through
the use of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).
Feral cats, the semi-wild offspring of abandoned
domestic cats, live and reproduce in our streets, parks, and backyards
and number in at least the tens of thousands in New York City alone.
When unneutered and unmanaged, they contribute significantly to
overcrowding in our shelters and increased euthanasia rates. Through
TNR, the cats' health and well-being are significantly improved
because fighting and mating are greatly reduced or eliminated, the
spread of disease is markedly decreased, and no new litters are
born to suffer. The stabilized population diminishes over time naturally
through attrition.
The NYCFCC provides a forum for involved organizations
to share information and join together to promote TNR.
