The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., is
working with the City of New York toward the day when no New York
City dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament is killed merely
because he or she does not have a home.
To achieve that goal, the Alliance, a 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit corporation, has formed a public-private partnership
with the City of New York to develop creative solutions to deal
with issues of animal care and control in New York City. We are
bringing together all not-for-profit
animal care groups, small and large, that are already working
effectively to place and/or spay and neuter New York City's dogs
and cats. Through our multi-year program, we will help these groups
work to their highest potential.
Organizational Overview
Founded in 2002, The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals
is a non-profit, public-private partnership of over 160 animal rescue
groups and shelters working with the City of New York toward the
day when no New York City dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament
is killed merely because he or she does not have a home.
•
For
the first time, New York City's animal rescue community has
been united towards the no-kill goal. The more
than 160 animal rescue groups
and shelters participating in The Mayor's Alliance for
NYC's Animals are now working in collaboration on behalf of
the city's homeless animals. The Alliance was created to enable
the pooling of resources, overcome the differences in priorities,
and facilitate the collaboration of four key groups (the public,
local government, Animal Care & Control of NYC, and local
no-kill shelters and rescue groups) to solve the problem of
animal homelessness in NYC.
•
The euthanasia
rate of New York City's homeless animals is at its lowest
in history. More than 41,000 animals entered AC&C in NYC last year. In collaboration with our participating rescue groups and shelters, we have succeeded in reducing the euthanasia rate from 74% to 33% (a reduction of 41% between 2002, the year the Alliance was formed, and 2009).
The
Mayor's Alliance public-private partnership is setting —
and being recognized as — a national model for community
animal rescue efforts. Groups across the country
are working to create animal alliances replicating the Mayor's
Alliance for NYC's Animals' successful model.
