Our Mission Statement

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., is working with the City of New York toward the day when no New York City dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament is killed merely because he or she does not have a home.

To achieve that goal, the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, has formed a public-private partnership with the City of New York to develop creative solutions to deal with issues of animal care and control in New York City. We are bringing together all not-for-profit animal care groups, small and large, that are already working effectively to place and/or spay and neuter New York City's dogs and cats. Through our multi-year program, we will help these groups work to their highest potential.

Organizational Overview

Founded in 2002, The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is a non-profit, public-private partnership of over 140 animal rescue groups and shelters working with the City of New York toward the day when no New York City dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament is killed merely because he or she does not have a home.

For the first time, New York City's animal rescue community has been united towards the no-kill goal. The more than 140 animal rescue groups and shelters participating in The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals are now working in collaboration on behalf of the city's homeless animals. The Alliance was created to enable the pooling of resources, overcome the differences in priorities, and facilitate the collaboration of four key groups (the public, local government, Animal Care & Control of NYC, and local no-kill shelters and rescue groups) to solve the problem of animal homelessness in NYC.

The euthanasia rate of New York City's homeless animals is at its lowest in history. In collaboration with our participating rescue groups and shelters, we have succeeded in reducing euthanasia from 74% of the approximately 43,000 cats and dogs entering Animal Care & Control in 2002 (the first year of the Mayor's Alliance) to 43% in 2007 (below 50% for the first time in NYC history).

The Mayor's Alliance public-private partnership is setting — and being recognized as — a national model for community animal rescue efforts. Groups in Baltimore, Buffalo, Long Island, Ohio, Texas, Albuquerque, and Tulsa now have or are working to create animal alliances replicating the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals' successful model.

Jane Hoffman, President: Jane Hoffman is a lawyer and outside of her work at the Alliance, serves as the Chair of the Committee on Legal Issues Pertaining to Animals at the New York City Bar Association. At the 2007 American Bar Association national conference in San Francisco, Jane was honored with the inaugural Excellence in the Advancement of Animal Law Award.
